HONEY! I SHRUNK THE CARPET!

Carpets add warmth and character to a home. It adds colour, and patterns to what could have just been a plain room. However, they are prone to wear and tear as they generally receive a lot of foot traffic. They also are not easy to replace as they tend to be expensive. Thus, we try our best to keep them in their pristine condition, either with prevention, or cleaning after-the-fact. However, unbeknownst to the many of us, there are types of carpets the can shrink if cleaned incorrectly. These two types are: Axminsters and Belgian Wilton carpets. These are often the type of carpets that you do not want to clean by yourself.

Axminister carpets are usually made with wool facing fibre, and jute backing, both of which absorb water very well. A wet facing on top of a wet backing is often the reason for these types of carpet to shrink. Belgian Wilton carpets on the other hand are made with polypropylene facing and jute backing. Since polypropylene cannot absorb water, moisture often tend to go straight all the way to the jute backing, causing the shrinkage.

Bad cleaning techniques and weak equipment can also contribute to the shrinkage of your carpet. Household and shop-vac vacuums do not have enough power to suck out all of the moisture left on the carpet. It is often time better to call a trusted professional to do your carpet cleaning. Professionals often have guarantees and insurances for your beloved carpet. This will ensure that your carpet will be cleaned according to standards, and you can rest assured that your carpets are in good hands.
